Interview of Vladyslav Sokolovskyi with the magazine Ukrainskyi yuryst (Ukrainian lawyer) as to the 15th anniversary of Sokolovskyi and Partners Law Firm works on Ukrainian legal market

In the late 90's, when Ukrainian legal market was only originating, niche law firms were not so popular as it is today, because it was difficult to foresee what would be in demand tomorrow or the day after. Vladyslav Sokolovskyi decided to do exactly what he did the best, and 15 years ago founded a company that focused almost exclusively on addressing tax issues. Today Sokolovskyi and Partners Law Firm has one of the largest in Ukraine teams of tax attorneys at law and is one of the most successful niche law firm. To learn how to build a highly specialized company in a proper manner, Ukrainskyi yuryst (Ukrainian lawyer) learned from the managing partner of Sokolovskyi and Partners Law Firm- Vladyslav Sokolovskyi.
Your Law Firm is one of the few Ukrainian law firms that are highly specialized since their founding. Why these particular areas were chosen? And how this approach generally paid itself off?
We have always been a specialized law firm - the tax law was our core practice from the very beginning. Perhaps it was for historical reasons. Nowadays all law companies have tax practice, but in 1997 when I won my first tax case, there were not so many companies who were interested in these issues. Why? In the late 90's tax lawyers could do little to help their clients because the tax authority had many rights and the largest of them was the possibility to collect money from accounts without a court order. So the work of lawyers was to return money through the courts. The clients themselves did not see prospects at court hearing, so they almost did not seek legal advice as to the tax actions appeal. In 2000 the legislation was changed and the tax authority no longer had the right to direct debiting, so the opportunity to defend the interests of the client in court appeared. Also for 10 years already we have been engaged in the criminal law. This is logical because the tax law is tightly connected with the criminal law, almost all tax audits end with criminal proceedings. We can say that we are working on a joint of tax and criminal law, and this is how we differ from the others. To work in this field, you should have a strong team of tax attorneys at law, and we have it.
Thus, this approach has eventually justified itself. In 2008-2009, many law companies had to massively close some practices and they thought what to cover them with. And our practices have always remained relevant.
